Covered Backyard Retreat
Scope
The family was looking for a covered backyard retreat that was airy yet cozy where they could entertain and come together with family and friends. They opted for a 24’x20’ roof extension over their existing patio that would feature a 22-foot stone fireplace and space to mount a 60-inch flat-screen TV, all while not obstructing their backyard views.
With the approval of the plans by the engineer, we are excited that the project can now officially begin.
Our crew starts with the footings that support the covered patio roof and the massive stone fireplace.
Once the concrete for the footings has cured, our framers begin installing the solid 8x8" Douglas Fir posts that will carry the load of the roof addition.
The tops of the 14-foot posts are notched out to support the beams that will hold the roof structure.
The ledger board has been bolted to the exterior brick wall connecting the roof addition to the house.
The vaulted ceiling is 15 feet high and 20 feet at the center. It will look stunning when the project is complete.
And here is a peek under the roof structure. The 24-foot triple LVL beams will be cladded in cedar and the rafters covered in tongue and groove pine boards.
Now that the addition is framed out, our hardscape team can start work on building the fireplace.
The wood-burning fireplace is coming together nicely. Completed, it reaches 22 feet.
Everything has been prepared for the 60" flat screen TV that we will mount over the fireplace mantel at the end of the construction.
Our roofing crew is installing the last few shingles on the new roof.
To redirect the water from the gutters and downspouts, we installed a French drain system that collects water from the area and diverts it through a buried drainage pipe to the back of the property.
Our electricians are installing the lanterns on the two exterior posts, as well as the recessed lights, fans, and motion sensor floodlights in the ceiling of the addition.
The two coats of Sikkens ProLux Cetol on the ceiling and posts add protection to the wood and accentuate the warmth and the beauty of the natural grains.
With the project completed, we can now take a moment to appreciate the scale of the stacked stone fireplace and the beauty of its natural colors, which, together with the stained wood from the addition, create an elegant and inviting outdoor space.
Under the addition, the natural stone colors tastefully complement the warm tones of the wooden posts and the paneling of the vaulted ceiling giving the 480 square feet area a welcoming ambiance. Add to that the cozy atmosphere of a crackling wood fire and the excitement that comes with watching a good game on the 60-inch flat-screen TV, and you have the perfect place to relax with your family or to entertain your friends.
